LEGO approves fan project and partners with Universal for new set due 2013.
A LEGO Back to the Future play-set is in production.
LEGO chose the Back to the Future DeLorean Time Machine set as part of its Summer Review of fan projects. It conducts these reviews every three months on the LEGO Cuusoo website.
Other sets that have been approved and produced in the past include LEGO Minecraft.
The Back to the Future LEGO beat off stiff competition, including ideas for LEGO Legend of Zelda, EVE Online and a Modular Western Town play-set.
A statement from LEGO read: "It is with great pleasure we reveal that the next LEGO Cuusoo set will be the Back to the Future Time Machine. The final product is still in development in coordination with our licence partner, Universal Partnerships & Licensing."
The creators have said they will donate the royalties they'll receive from product sales to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research.
