Marvel enters casual games market

Deal with developer Gazillion will see MMO games arriving based on its super heroes.

Marvel Entertainment is moving its super heroes into the casual gaming space, having inked worldwide licensing agreement with developer Gazillion for massively multiplayer online games.

The first game in development is a casual MMO for younger audiences, based on Marvel's Super Hero Squad property.

In addition, Gazillion will be developing and publishing Marvel Universe, a hotly tipped MMO for PC and consoles.

"Marvel's library features a large and world-renowned stable of characters, making it tailor made for massively multiplayer entertainment that will appeal to a wide audience eager for more opportunities to interact with these iconic character franchises," said Simon Philips, president of worldwide consumer products, Marvel Entertainment.

"Gazillion's excellence in casual and AAA MMOs makes this an ideal partnership to fully leverage this powerful entertainment arena, bringing fans an exciting, interactive experience with the Marvel brand."

Marvel is really getting after it. Our generation is obviously much more into movies and the Internet than the old comic books, and Marvel is going to take advantage of that. Good for them! The movies have been great so far, and I'm sure the games will be as well. I would love to have the super hero squade at my website.
