Golden Compass tops box office

UK is biggest market as New Line's Philip Pullman adaptation enjoys a solid opening weekend.
New Line is celebrating today after its lavish adaptation of the first book in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series, The Golden Compass, got off to a solid start at global box offices.
The film - which stars Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig - took the top spot in the US with $26.1 million in receipts.
The biggest market was in the UK, where New Line said it drew an estimated $18 million over five days from 950 screens (although other sources put the figure at between $12m-$13m.
France (770 screens), Germany (1,000 screens) and Russia (550 screens) each provided around $5 million.
Results in Spain, an estimated $10 million from 536 screens, benefited from a national holiday on the Thursday.
In second place behind The Golden Compass during the weekend was Disney's Enchanted. It took an estimated $11.6 million from 2,594 screens in 18 territories.
A big factor in this was a number one in Italy which garnered $3.4 million from 400 screens. Meanwhile, a Greece opening produced $735,000 from 50 sites for a per-screen average of $14,700.
