Major publishing deal sealed for Target Entertainment's first film property.

Target Entertainment has kicked off the licensing programme for The Nutcracker by inking a major publishing deal with Penguin.

Penguin has scooped the World English language publishing rights for the forthcoming movie - which is Target's first film property.

The firm will release a range of books in October 2008 to reflect the magical style of the film and bring the classic story to life for a new generation. The collection will include a hard back storybook for younger readers, a novelisation, a paper-engineered pop-up book, sticker and activity books, along with a picture book and read along CD with exclusive content.

"We're delighted to be working with Penguin on The Nutcracker, their enthusiasm and passion for this movie is second to none and anyone who has been lucky enough to view scenes from the film will realise that their plan for the books perfectly represents the fabulous style and feel of this major new movie," said Shelley Kerridge, Target's head of licensing.

Eric Huang, Penguin Groups special projects director brands and licensing, added: "The unique heritage of The Nutcracker combined with this stunning new cinematic interpretation will translate beautifully to books next Christmas. Penguin is very much looking forward to being a part of The Nutcracker story in 2008."
