BDO: Mid market retailers enjoy good Christmas

Total sales up 2.4 per cent for week ending Dec 27th according to firm's sales tracker.

Medium-sized retailers will be celebrating after this Christmas, according to the latest figures from BDO's High Street Sales Tracker.

Sales were up 2.4 per cent for the week ending December 27th, a good outcome, although slightly below expectations given the weak comparisons.

Trade during the first two weeks of the month was particularly strong, with many stores reporting double digit increases.

Fashion retailers saw takings increase by 2.5 per cent, while non fashion was up 3.6 per cent. Stores focusing on outdoor gear had an exceptional month, while luxury and gifting also rose strongly.

The homeware sector dipped slightly by 1.6 per cent.

Don Williams, head of retail at BDO, said: "On the whole, mid-market retailers have had a merry Christmas. Sales for December are up 2.4 per cent on last year and less dramatic discounting in 2009 means margins are healthier, too.

"Online sales go from strength to strength - sales have doubled on last year."
