APPAREL MONTH: Woolies closure impacts sector

The closure of Woolworths contributed to a 16 per cent drop in the licensed apparel sector last year.

According to NPD License Tracker the licensed clothing market for children 0-14 yrs old was worth £442m in 2009 but was down 16 per cent year on year (for the 12 months up to September 2009) from £512m.

The closure of Woolworths, which was the High Street's biggest retailer of licensed products, in particular toys and children's clothing, has had a major impact on the retail landscape, which has seen a shift towards major supermarkets such as Asda and Tesco.

Specialist clothing retailers such as Next, BHS, M&S and New Look have also benefited.
