Dreamworks new 3D film, How To Train Your Dragon, tops US listings in opening weekend.
Dreamworks new 3D flick How To Train Your Dragon easily slayed the competition at the US box office during its opening weekend.
The film ended a three-week run at the top by Alice in Wonderland, taking $43.3 million. Tim Burton's take on Lewis Carroll's tale took $17.3 million.
HTTYD received 65 per cent of its take from 3D screens, according to icv2. Indeed, the film took over the bulk of 3D screens at the expense of Alice in Wonderland, which is expected to become the first film of 2010 to pass the $300 million mark sometime this week.
The total US box office for the top ten films, however, was down 18 per cent compared with the same weekend last year, when Dreamworks' Monsters vs Aliens debuted with $59.3 million.
