PUBLISHING MONTH: TV tie-ins

Why many 'bookable' shows are missing huge opportunities in publishing.

Publishing books based upon television programmes is an old and ancient art. In the ‘60s and ‘70s classic series like The Avengers, Dr Who, Star Trek, The Prisoner and Dad’s Army all inspired successful tie ins and the category has created some of the bestselling non-fiction books of all time.

Why then, when books have never been more available and licensing has never been so popular, do some popular and very ‘bookable’ TV series miss out? Our experience at Metrostar is that they fall into a chasm of missed opportunity.  This is the story of why the chasm exists and how producers and rights owners can bridge it.
