HAVE YOUR SAY: More acquisitions to come?HAVE YOUR SAY: More acquisitions to come?

Licensing.biz invites you to share your thoughts on this Friday's topic.

Yesterday Entara announced that it would now be officially known as part of Parthenon Entertainment, having been acquired by the firm at the end of 2007.

As the licensing business becomes ever more competitive, do you think acquisitions could become something of a trend through 2008 and beyond?

BULLDOG

Is the only way for a small firm to really make an impression in the market now to tie up with a larger company? But what benefits - and problems - will this new kind of business model bring?

To me its not a trend but a needed consolidation in our industry. It will happen on the licensor side as well as on the agency side so 12 months from now the licensing industry landscape will look much different.
Its truly exiting times.

In a word, YES! With the absence of the machinery to create a break out hit in today's marketplace for medium size companies, the only way to develop revenue growth is via acquisitions. In addition, many small agencies, distribution companies and animation studios don't have the financial scale and other resources to compete any longer in a global marketplace. And without the financial backing, they can't hold onto the valuable ancillary rights for the properties they have created. The mirror image of this scenario can be seen with retailers, airlines and banks. Without scale, it is next to impossible to compete in today's marketplace.
