Tesco eyes department store model

New openings being planned to rival the likes of Debenhams and M&S.

Internet reports are suggesting this morning that UK supermarket giant Tesco is planning to open a series of department store-style shops.

A report on business.scotsman.com said that the move was an effort to rival High Street chains such as Debenhams, M&S and Bhs.

The big town centre sites will apparently focus on non-food ranges from jewellery and watches to household goods, as well as groceries. In a marketing document obtained by Property Week, it described the multi-level town centre outlets as a 'whole new concept'.

This is interesting news - especially if extra space is given over to licensed product.

Nobody needs more of Tesco. Their monopolisation of the UK retail sector is good for nobody except the executives sitting on their fat salaries and bonuses....

But if it offers more choice to the consumer, is that a bad thing? And they can fit an awful lot of licensed products onto all that shelf space...
