Popular boys’ brand marks sales of 200 million toys at close of 2007, according to Bandai figures.

Power Rangers will also launch its 15th TV series this month, Operation Overdrive, as part of its crystal anniversary celebrations.

Broadcast for the first time in the UK in 1993, the Power Rangers live action series was adopted from the Japanese Tokusatsu Super series. Since then 14 series have been broadcast in 22 countries along with two films and a Christmas single.

Gavin Quirk, brand manager at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment said: “In the first instance you’ve got to take kids’ TV seriously and provide positive superhero role models, but you’ve also got to be innovative and refresh brands year on year whilst retaining certain key elements.

“Add to all of this the continued investment in production in Power Rangers’, and taking into account the great entertainment, strong values and escapism it provides for kids, and you begin to get an idea as to why it’s been so successful for so long.”

It is through these values that we look forward to entertaining a whole new generation of kids.”

Chrissie Cheshire, a buyer from Woolworth’s said: “Power Rangers has enjoyed phenomenal, enduring success over the last 15 years. It’s a huge favourite with boys’ and the toys certainly take pride of place in millions of boy’s hearts and bedrooms up and down the country.”

I'm genuinely stunned that this franchise has lasted as long as it has. I remember watching it when I was a little one, and spending ages searching around for the hard to find toys. It was like TMNT all over again! And, let's face it, it wasn't like the TV series was any good or anything. Still, good for them.
