Dr Seuss adaptation tramples rivals at North American box office, becoming biggest opening of the year.
The computer animated big screen adaptation of Dr Seuss classic Horton Hears A Who has proved a hit at the US box office.
The 20th Century Fox film took weekend sales of $45.1 million, according to Reuters, making it the biggest opening of the year so far.
Horton Hears A Who features the voices of Jim Carrey and Steve Carell. Carrey voices the main character, an elephant who stumbles upon a speck which happens to be a tiny planet, home to a city called Who-ville.
Carell is the mayor of the city.
Fox said that Horton Hears A Who ranks as the fifth biggest G-rated opening ever; the top spot is held by Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo.
The film is due to open in UK cinemas on Friday March 21st.
