Week ending June 14th shows sales in positive territory for first time in six weeks for category.
Sales figures from BDO Stoy Hayward's High Street Sales Tracker for the week ending June 14th saw total sales fall - but there was some joy for those retailers in the homeware sector.
Total sales dropped 4.9 per cent on a like for like basis, the worst result for 16 weeks.
Non fashion retailers had a mixed week, with luxury and gifting stores witnessing higher demand, while healthy and beauty and leisure-related stores saw sales fall. Fashion retailers, however, saw sales fall by 8.5 per cent. In general, only specialist stores, or retailers running promotions, saw any uplift in demand.
However, homewares grew by 4.5 per cent, helped by improved demand for lighting and household items.
"Against soft prior year comparatives, it was a pretty disappointing week for most mid-market retailers," admitted Rupert Eastell, head of retail at BDO.
