Tracker shows strongest level of growth since first week of January for week ending April 12th.
Figures from BDO Stoy Hayward's High Street Sales Tracker show that the week ending April 12th had the strongest level of growth since the first week of January, with total retail sales up 7.9 per cent.
Non fashion retailers were up 5.2 per cent, which meant takings rose for the sixth consecutive week. Many stores benefited from the Easter holiday, with gifting and luxury in particular maintaining the strong sales momentum of recent weeks.
Fashion stores, meanwhile, rose 10.5 per cent, the fastest level of growth since the first week of the year.
"The Easter calendar shift helped boost sales this week with overall like-for-like sales rising by 7.9 per cent," confirmed Rupert Eastell, head of retail at BDO Stoy Hayward. "If sales continue to stay in the black, then April could see two consecutive months of positive growth - the first for more than two years."
Homewares sales dropped, however, quite steeply by 10.5 per cent, although non store sales rose by 54.1 per cent, again helped by Easter.
