Publishing sensation eyes up licensing success; CopCorp on board in North America.
Independent agency Caroline Mickler Limited has been appointed the master licensing agent for the adult fiction publishing success, Fifty Shades of Grey.
As well as building up the programme in the UK, Mickler is also working with the brand owner to appoint agents for territories worldwide. CopCorp is already on board as the North American agent.
The trilogy of books by British author EL James - Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed - tell the story of the relationship between graduate Anastasia Steele and billionaire Christian Grey.
The trilogy began life as a virtual publishing success story, before making its way into mainstream publication. In the UK, book sales have passed the million mark, while in the US the titles have sold 13 million copies.
The film rights have already been sold and a boxed set of the books is imminent.
Among the licensing categories being discussed are lingerie/sleepwear, apparel, fragrances, beauty products, bedding, home furnishings, stationery, jewellery and adult products.
Mickler will be meeting with potential licensees to discuss opportunities at this week's Licensing International.
"The best selling Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy is the biggest sensation to hit publishing in many years," Mickler explained. "The market's interest in Fifty Shades of Grey as a brand is enormous. With continuing book sales and a film version keeping awareness high, we expect this property to make a very strong showing in a number of licensed categories over the coming months."
