But project is unlikely to reach cinemas for several years, says leading director.
The director of the previous four Harry Potter films, David Yates, has confirmed that he is working with the BBC to develop Doctor Who into a movie.
The film - which will take two to three years to get right - will take a fresh approach to the show, according to Yates.
A report on BBC News said that Yates is believed to be working with Jane Tranter, the head of LA-based BBC Worldwide Productions.
However, a statement from a BBC spokesman said that the project won't reach cinemas for several years and, as yet, there is no script, cast or production crew in place.
