Ghostbusters VR game gets surprise release

The 10-minute VR experience has hit the Playstation Store as well as Google Play

A VR game based on the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot has unexpectedly landed on the US Playstation Store and Google Play.

The game entitled Ghostbusters Now Hiring will be released episodically, with only the first act entitled The Firehouse, available now. No details have yet been announced on further acts.

The game is priced at $6.99 on the Playstation Store, whilst the Google Play version prompts a $5 purchase.

“I think Ghostbusters is this wonderful [intellectual property] because it has so many storytelling opportunities,” co-creator Ivan Reitman told io9. “And it’s a particularly good one for VR.

“VR has always been something I’ve been interested in as a storyteller. The rules of VR are quite different in terms of how you use editing, multiple angles, and most important, how you tell the story.”

Jake Zim, the SVP of VR for Sony Pictures Entertainment added: “Where we put out chapter one, if people like it and see what they want, then we can add chapter two and keep going. Ghostbusters is so big you can kind of go all over the place.”

Reitman also confirmed in the interview that a follow up to the 2016 reboot is in consideration, despite its relative disappointment.
