Horrible Histories movie set for 2019 release

The movie announcement bolsters licensing line-up as the brand's 25th anniversary approaches.

Following the announcement that Rocket Licensing has been appointed to represent the Horrible Histories, Scholastic's hit kids brand has announced it is heading to the silver screen with a feature film headed to cinemas in 2019.

Going into production next year, Horrible Histories: The Movie is being produced by UK distribution, sales and production company Altitude Film Entertainment with Citrus Films, the company whose television arm is behind the successful small-screen adaptations of Horrible Histories. Altitude’s recent hits include Moonlight, Lady Macbeth and Loving Vincent.

The film will be written by Olivier award-winner Jessica Swale with Dominic Brigstocke (who has worked on the BAFTA-award winning show) on hand direct.

“A film version of the hit TV show and books was always likely but this is still an enormously exciting development," said Charlie Donaldson, joint MD of Rocket Licensing. "The writing, acting, directing and producing talent behind this project will further enhance a brand that, after almost 25 years old, is as fresh, funny and popular as ever.”

Horrible Histories has already had an enviably strong presence in the licensing space, having enjoyed support from 20 high-profile partners such as Danilo, Winning Moves and Smiffys. The film and imminent 25th anniversary of the brand will undoubtedly present new opportunities for Rocket and Scholastic to expand the licensing push in categories including apparel, games, puzzles, homewares and digital applications.
