New Barbie movie attracts record numbers

Barbie in the Pink Shoes sees 43% increase in admissions for opening weekend compared to previous years.

The latest movie release from Barbie has attracted record numbers at the box office.

On its opening weekend, Barbie in the Pink Shoes saw a 43 per cent increase in admissions compared to previous years.

The exclusive screenings ran nationwide across Vue cinema - and January data from NPD is already suggesting that the toys will also be a big hit.

The lead doll features Barbie as Kristyn Farraday - making a dramatic transformation from an elegant dance outfit to a pink costume for the final performance. This has contributed to over half of the spring entertainment growth, which is up by 2.6 per cent year to date.

In addition, the DVD has already reached the number one slot in the children's chart for pre-orders on Amazon, prior to its release on Monday March 18th.

The activity around Barbie in the Pink Shoes is part of an extensive marketing programme to support the brand in 2013.

NPD data for January showed that Barbie continues to rank as the number one fashion doll property and the number three property in the total toy market.
