The Wolverine tops UK box office

Fox’s The Wolverine has gone straight to the number one spot in the UK box office in its first week on release, reports Screen.

The sequel, which sees Logan head to Japan to confront a dying man from his past, made £4.7m.

This was enough to bump Disney’s Monsters University from the top spot but marks the lowest ever UK opening for an X-Men movie.

Elsewhere, Monsters University had to settle for second place after two weeks as No.1.

The prequel added another £3.1m to its UK total, which now stands at £15m.

Remaining in third is Universal’s Despicable Me 2. The sequel made 2.1m and now has a total of £34.7m in the UK.

This makes Despicable Me 2 the ninth highest grossing animation film of all time in the UK, leapfrogging Up and pushing The Lion King out of the Top Ten.

Monsters University and Despicable Me 2 will hope to rule over the summer holidays for a little while yet, although competition is arriving with the release of The Smurfs 2 tomorrow.
