The Very Hungry Caterpillar celebrates 1,000 week long UK chart success

Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar is celebrating a 1,000 week long UK chart run, one of only two books to achieve such a record.

The popular children’s title has held a position within the Nielsen BookScan Service Total Consumer Market Top 5,000 since records officially began in 1998.

In that time, only two books have featured in the chart every week: the 1994 paperback edition of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and the 1993 edition of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.

Today, the Puffin edition of Eric Carle’s classic is selling at a steady 1,000 or more copies a week, helping the title achieve the accolade of most-read children’s book in the UK.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is also the focus of a multi-category licensing campaign, managed in the UK by Rocket Licensing.

Charlie Donaldson, joint managing director of Rocket Licensing, said: “The sheer consistency of the book’s sales is a welcome reminder that great storytelling and illustration never go out of style and we are thrilled to be representing this classic and hugely successful brand for licensing.”
