TRAP looks to bolster membership following successful 2015 in the fight against counterfeiters

Trademark and Rights holders Against Piracy (TRAP), a worldwide collective of rights holders and publishers, is looking to expand its membership this year following a successful 2015.

The group works with the biggest names in music, film, TV, art and sport in the fight against counterfeit products.

Through lobbying and direct action, TRAP protects the public from purchasing counterfeit products while enabling musicians, artists, actors and athletes to provide their fans with official merchandise.

Liaising with police and governmental bodies, TRAP maintains the services of global investigators and security consultants, a combination that the firm claims ‘has proven a continual success in prosecuting those infringing upon our rights in physical retail and online’.

In the online space, 2015 saw TRAP work on Amazon, eBay, Facebook, Redbubble, Etsy, Allegro, Rautken, Zazzle and others, with over 250,000 direct infringements removed.

This activity also saw 5,000 seller accounts permanently suspended and over £3,000,000 worth of bootleg product removed.

Major operations in Oxford Street and Camden in London as well as Leicester, Stoke, Wrexham, Bournemouth and other major towns and cities saw over 150,000 products confiscated from the market boasting a street value equated to £2,500,000.

One example saw Mustafa Sahin found guilty of trademark and fraud offences after the seizure of 11,447 bottles of counterfeit One Direction perfumes. He was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment.
