Garfield gets fans moving with Garfield Fit app

Lasagne-loving feline, Garfield, is hoping to get fans moving with the launch of the new mobile app, Garfield Fit.

Developed by Animoca Brands, the app aims to turn real-life exercise into a game, to help increase motivation and adherence to physical activity.

Users simply need to launch the app on their phone or Apple Watch and then begin moving, which will activate Garfield who will respond to users’ activity level and track information, including pace, steps taken, calories burnt and time spent exercising.

“A sedentary lifestyle is extremely detrimental to health. The World Health Organisation recommends 60 minutes of daily exercise for children and 150 minutes weekly for adults, but too many people fall short,” said Robby Yung, CEO of Animoca Brands.

“In Garfield Fit we leverage the famously lazy cartoon cat to make healthy exercise goals attainable and fun.”

Garfield Fit will also convert activity into coins, meaning users can customise their experience and unlock outfits for Garfield.

Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield, added: “People don’t often associate Garfield with fitness, but in truth his motto has always been, ‘Eat. Sleep. Play.’ And Garfield should be a great motivator. After all, if Garfield can get fit, anyone can.”
