Ready Player One trailer shows world of pop culture collide

The new trailer for Steven Spielberg’s latest blockbuster film Ready Player One has dropped online and pop culture fans have spotted several cameos from a plethora of screen icons.

The film follows the story of a teenager who gets caught up in an adventure to save a virtual world known as the Oasis. The trailer features appearances from characters from Overwatch, Tomb Raider, Battletoads, Batman, The Iron Giant, Chucky and Gundam.

The book on which the film is based has come under criticism for being a shallow ode to ’80s pop culture, while the latest poster for the film sports an obvious goof that has garnered online ridicule. However, despite criticisms, the new trailer has racked up over 4 million views in just a day.

With the might of Warner Bros. behind it, the film is sure to have a substantial licensing push as the race to create the ultimate cinematic universe continues.

The film hits cinemas on March 30th.
