Netflix is launching a ‘Pokémon Go-style’ app game for Stranger Things in 2020

In a move that sees the streaming platform align itself closer with the gaming space, Netflix has detailed the upcoming launch of a Stranger Things app game.

The new role-playing game-puzzle hybrid will use location-based technology – the kind popularised by the Pokémon Go hit title – to allow players to navigate the Upside Down. It will play on its ‘80s call-back theme by featuring ‘Saturday Morning ‘80s cartoon retro graphics.’

The announcement that the Netflix Originals show was making the leap onto the digital platform was made at the ongoing E3 videogaming conference.

“We have a new Stranger Things on mobile platforms coming in 2020,” said Chris Lee, Netflix’s director of interactive games at the event.

The game is in development with Next Games in Helsinki, Finland and will be launching to iOS and Android next year.

Further to this, a slide behind Lee during the conference confirmed that Netflix does indeed have more plans for games to come, and the discussion concluded with the director teasing that the company “has been busy in the last year making new friends. We have a number of new projects coming out.”

Lee also teased an extension of a partnership between Netflix’s Stranger Things and Epic Games’ Fortnite, that has so far dropped easter eggs into Fortnite season 9, such as the appearance of Scoops Ahoy – the ice cream store from the show – within gameplay.

“There’s a bit more behind that in a few weeks,” said Lee.

On top of this, the streaming platform has partnered with Nintendo to bring The Dark Crystal to the Nintendo Switch, using E3 to reveal The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics to fans. The game is based on the Netflix show called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
