Disney has partnered with the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund in a move to raise awareness around conservation and the crises that much of Africa’s wildlife currently finds itself in.
Inspired by the release of the latest CGI adaptation, The Lion King this July, the campaign – titled The Lion King Protect the Pride – focuses on protecting and revitalising lion populations and the habitats they need to thrive.
As part of the campaign, Disney Stores across Europe will be launching Special Edition Simba and Nala plush lions. Each will represent one of the 40,000 li0ns Disney and the Lion Recovery Fund are working to ensure a future for in the wild.
For every plush Simba or Nala that is sold, Disney will donate $5 to the Wildlife Conservation Network in support of the Lion Recovery Fund and its local partners.
In the 25 years that have passed since Disney first released the original version of The Lion King, Africa has lost half of its lions. Only around 20,000 remain today.
It is the vision of the Lion Recovery Fund to double the lion population by 2050 through efforts that engage communities to ensure a better future for African wildlife and their habitats.
Disney has already donated more than $2 million to the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund and its partners and will make additional grants as well as invite fans to help increase the donation to a total contribution of up to $3 million.
