20th Century Fox beats rivals to $1bn domestic box office threshold

20th Century Fox has become the first studio to cross the $1 billion threshold in the US this year.

While various sources report a box office slump in the US, Fox has enjoyed a strong first half of 2014, channeled by revenue generated by new releases including X-Men: Days of Future Past, Rio 2 and The Other Woman.

Recent release, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has also contributed following a $73 million US debut this weekend.

Variety suggests that the studio’s most significant accomplishment however is the Fault in Our Stars that has earned nearly $120 million in the US having been produced for just $12m.

DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 has also enjoyed a successful launch, bringing in $152 million for the studio.

20th Century Fox will now end its summer run of films next month with the release of its new comedy Let’s Be Cops.
