The Ghostbusters are calling on an extensive new licensing programme to support and celebrate its 35th anniversary next year.
In anticipation of the milestone year, Sony Pictures Consumer Products and Ghost Corps, along with publisher FourThirtyThree Inc are set to launch GhostbustersWorld, a next generation mobile AR game this autumn.
The game forms part of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s year of global activations, partnerships and exclusives lined up to celebrate the 1984 classic film.
Ghostbusters World will allow fans of all ages and levels to hunt and battle hundreds of ghosts from all dimensions of the iconic franchise, including the films, TV shows, comic books, theme parks and video games. The game offers fans an immersive experience, featuring an original story and artwork from the creators behind the IDW comic book series.
The game is now in soft launch in select countries and includes skill-based single player AR battle mechanics and RPG-style multiplayer mode. It also leverages Google’s ARCore and Maps API and Apple’s ARkit to ensure a unique user experience on Android and iOS devices. The game is now available for pre-registration at the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

With the new AR game, the classic film has evolved and taken on a whole new life of its own, allowing fans to immerse themselves in the legendary world that is Ghostbusters.
“Aside from the upcoming launch of Ghostbusters World, it’s certainly been a busy year so far and celebration plans are well underway for the big anniversary next year. We hope fans are as excited as we are for the next line-up of activations – stay tuned.”
As part of Ghostbuster’s 35 celebrations program, earlier this summer Sony Pictures and Ghost Corps announced a new live event, the Ghostbusters Fan Fest presented by Wizard World to be held on June 8-9, 2019.
Fans will participate in exclusive panels, meet the Ghostbusters creators, talent and crew and experience Ghostbusters AR and VR games. Over the course of this year Wizard World has been running a touring experience at Wizard World Comic Con events featuring a pop-up show with exclusive Ghostbusters merchandise which will continue into 2019.
Kicking off this month, festivals, symphony orchestras and performing arts centres around the world will present Ghostbusters Live in concert for all the classical music enthusiasts. Key tour dates announced so far include Dublin’s National Concert Hall (7 Dec), Liverpool Philharmonic Hall (28-29 Dec) and Toronto’s Sony Centre (8 June 2019).
McFarlane Toys is also set to release a Stranger Things 2 Ghostbusters Costume Figure Set, featuring the iconic jumpsuits worn by Mike, Lucas, Will and Dustin that were made so popular in the 1984 hit movie.
This year Sony Pictures Consumer Products also produced limited edition Ghostbusters posters with Mondo which were released at Comic Con.
Some of the brands participating in next year’s big celebration plans include Playmobil (figures and playsets), Mattel (games, activities and crafts), Hallmark (seasonal), Hybrid (apparel), Ripple Junction (apparel), Rubies (Costumes) and Insight Editions (publishing).
