Kevin Smith is teaming up with Mattel to produce a new He-Man anime series for the streaming platform, Netflix.
The move follows a recent resurgence for the Mattel brand He-Man and the Masters of the Universe the past few years, having been brought back into public attention via Netflix’s popular She-Ra and the Princesses of Power series.
She-Ra was developed with the help of DreamWorks Animation TV and is now awaiting the launch of its third season on the platform.
Meanwhile, a live action He-Man and the Masters of the Universe film is currently in the works, with a proposed release date of March 5, 2021.
Now, fans are being given yet another means with which to immerse themselves in the Universe – by the Power of Grayskull – and that of Hollywood director, Kevin Smith, who broke the news of the upcoming anime series at the annual Power-Con Convention.
“It will pick up with many of the characters’ journeys where they left off decades ago,” Smith told crowds at the US convention.
Smith will serve as showrunner and executive producer, and the series will be produced by Mattel Television.
“In Revelation, [the story] will pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor,” added Smith. “This is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid.”
The series will be animated by Powerhouse Animation, who animated Netflix’s Castelvania.
