Captain America: Civil War helps Disney pass $3bn in worldwide box office takings

Disney has set a trio of box office records as the launch of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War helps take it past the $3bn mark globally.

The latest installment in the Marvel universe is reportedly dominating moviegoing worldwide, also helping the studio pass the $1bn domestic marker for 2016, taking $181.1 million at the domestic box office this weekend.

On an international scale, the studio has topped $2bn with $2.22bn to date and $3bn globally with $3.341bn, surging past the watermark set last year by Universal in June with its launch of Jurassic World.

The box office success of Disney’s Captain America continues on the global scale too with a further $220m taken in its second weekend internationally, pushing the Marvel tentpole to $496.6m overseas and $678.4m worldwide.

The movie in which Captain America engages in a battle of the egos with Avengers colleague Iron Man is also keeping the US box office on track for a record performance in 2016 with $3.856bn through this weekend.

According to Variety, this is 7.8 per cent ahead of the same point last year and 14.7 per cent ahead of 2014.

Recent releases The Jungle Book and Zootopia has contributed to the success along side Star Wars: The Force Awakens that accounts for 30 per cent of Disney’s $936 million domestic box office total.

“We are in the midst of a great run of high quality branded entertainment,” said Dave Hollis, Disney’s executive VP of theatrical distribution.

“We’re fortunate to have great storytellers at the height of their games.”
