Trank’s spin-off is the second stand-alone Star Wars film announced, following news that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will also step behind the camera on a future Star Wars film.

"We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family," said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

Trank added: "The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time."
