Eighth book in the series is currently the number one bestselling title in the UK across all adult and children’s books

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck sells over 1.3m copies in first week on release

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck, the eighth book in Jeff Kinney’s popular series, has enjoyed first-week worldwide sales of more than 1.3 million copies in all formats.

In the UK, the book represented Penguin UK’s biggest ever first printing of a children’s book, with 800,000 copies printed.

Hard Luck is currently the number one best-selling title in the UK across all adult and children’s books, ending Alex Ferguson’s two week run at the top of the charts with My Autobiography.

“Sales for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck in the first week have been phenomenal and we are very proud that in the UK it is currently the number one best-selling title across all books, even knocking Alex Ferguson off his top spot," said Francesca Dow, MD of Penguin Children’s.

"We’re thrilled that the new book has debuted so strongly and there is lots more excitement to come with Jeff Kinney coming to the UK in December and the Christmas shopping season ahead.

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid is making retailers, parents, teachers and librarians very happy once again this year and above all gives kids what they want – one of the funniest book they’ll read.”

Author Jeff Kinney will also be visiting the UK in December this year, with large scale 1,000 seater live events in Birmingham and Dublin, a public signing in Waterstones, Kingston and major national TV, radio, print and online publicity.

Puffin has also launched A Wimpy Kid Lottery giving schools the chance of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to win a visit from Jeff to their school.

1,557 schools entered the competition, with Hucklow Primary School in Sheffield winning the visit.

Eight runner-up schools will win a visit from The Wimpy Kid Show, an event featuring film clips of Jeff Kinney and lots of interactive Wimpy Kid games.
