Disney begins development on The Princess Bride stage show

Disney Theatrical Productions is to commence development of a stage version of the 1987 hit The Princess Bride, reports The Guardian.

Originally written in 1973 by William Goldman, the postmodern fairy tale incorporates the classic tales of love and adventure, and is the latest of Disney’s silver screen portfolio to undergo the stage adaptation process.

Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, helped develop the screen adaptation starring Billy Crystal, Mel smith, Peter Cook, Cary Elwes and Robin Wright.

Horn said: "To now have a stage production of this film in development at Disney is honestly a dream come true.

"My involvement in The Princess Bride goes back to 1987 and it has always been close to my heart."
