At a Goldman Sachs conference yesterday, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the studio is already plotting out the future of Star Wars on the big screen beyond 2021.
“I had a meeting yesterday with Kathy Kennedy [president of Lucasfilm] and we mapped out – well, we reviewed – the Star Wars plans that we have until 2020,” said Iger.
“We have movies in development for Star Wars until then, and we started talking about what we’re going to do in 2021 and beyond. So, she’s not just making a Star Wars movie, she’s making a Star Wars universe, of sorts."
The most immediate return to that universe comes in December with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Iger also told the crowd that he doesn’t expect Rogue One to reach the same box office numbers as Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
"We never felt it would do the level that ‘Force Awakens’ did,” said Iger, but adding “the level of interest [in ‘Rogue One’] is as high as it was for Force Awakens.
Having seen the first cut of the movie, Iger said: “It’s really interesting in terms of Star Wars storytelling. We love what we’ve seen.”
