Disney readies live action The Little Mermaid movie

Disney has tapped playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda and songwriter Alan Menken for a live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.

According to Deadline, the pair will begin collaborating on the feature’s musical numbers while Miranda will produce the film alongside Marc Platt.

The line up has been recently announced by Sean Bailey, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production.

Reports suggest that the upcoming adaptation of the Has Christian Anderson tale will feature a mix of pre-existing songs from the 1989 Disney animated movie – a score for which Menken won two Oscars.

Meanwhile, Miranda (best known for his work on the historical musical, Hamilton) is extending his partnership with Disney further, starring with Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep and Ben Wishaw in a live action sequel of Mary Poppins.

Mary Poppins is one of the live action adaptations of past Disney films on the Disney slate that includes the upcoming Beauty and the Beast to be released in March next year.
