Slated for a 2018 release, new title will follow the adventures of a sea voyaging enthusiast

Disney reveals new animated film heroine Moana

Following the success of Frozen last year, Disney has revealed its latest heroine to take to the silver screen, a sea voyaging explorer called Moana.

Described as a ‘mythic adventure set around 2000 years ago and across a series of islands in the South Pacific’, the movie is slated for a 2018 release. reports that the film will be a step away from Disney’s typical fairytale storyline.

"The main character will be Moana Waialiki, a sea voyaging enthusiast, and the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators," said Disney.

"When her family needs her help, she sets off on an epic journey. The film will also include demigods and spirits taken from real mythology."

The film will be directoed by John Musker and Ron Clement who have worked on films such as Aladdin and The Princess and the Frog.
