Disney’s Maker Studios to drop 55,000 Youtubers

Disney’s Maker Studios is to lay off around 80 employees as it cuts support for more than 55,000 Youtubers, it has been reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The move has reportedly been in the works since before Pewdiepie’s controversial prank video that led to him being dropped from the label as well as having his YouTube Red show cancelled.

Maker Studios currently supports over 60,000 Youtubers which the firm hopes to whittle down to only 300, focusing on channels that are more in line with the ‘core values’ of Disney. In return, Maker’s operations will be brought in under the Disney banner.

Maker Studios was founded in 2009 by a group of influential YouTube community members and was purchased by Disney for $675m in 2014.
