Downton Abbey is finally launching into the escape room space

NBCUniversal is poised to launch a new first for its popular period drama series, Downton Abbey, through a partnership with Mystery Escape Room. The initiative will see the arrival of an escape room experience that will bring the show’s ‘rich cast of characters and set pieces to life,’ in an immersive new way.

The partnership brings with it a real promise of intrigue and interest for the series that has managed to capture the attention of audiences across the world, with the first licensed Downton Abbey escape room experience.

Opening in the US, the site at The Gateway is scheduled to launch this summer, and is being built to closely match the set of the popular series, with mystery centred around the show’s cast of renowned characters.

With the goal of transporting participants to the world of Downton Abbey in a hands-on, immersive experience, the Escape Room will enable players to touch set pieces and interact, as if they were playing characters on set.

“The recognisable surroundings of Downton will act to heighten tension for fans within the well-known experience of mystery escape rooms,” said Dominic Burns, SVP, brand management for NBCUniversal International Studios. “This is a growing genre of immersive entertainment and we expect fans of the show to be thrilled and challenged during their visit.”

Lesley Pardew, owner of Mystery Escape Room, added: “We are very excited and humbled to be working with a media giant like NBCUniversal to bring the drama of the beloved television series Downton Abbey to life in one of our escape rooms.

“The show is perfect for the experience because Downton Abbey is such a wonderful place and has such a rich set of characters and stories to draw from. We look forward to transporting our guests into the Downton Abbey world in a truly fun and unique way.”

“As a hub for specialty interactive experiences, we’re proud to have this addition to our roster of entertainment and art exhibits here at The Gateway,” says Jacklyn Briggs, marketing director. “This is a big deal and we can’t wait to invite people down to experience this world premiere event.”
