Egmont reveals key children’s publishing changes

Egmont has confirmed that it is bringing together its international children’s publishing activities under a new management structure.

The move follows the formation of new division, Egmont Publishing, which will house the Egmont Magazines and Egmont Kids Media businesses.

Rob McMenemy, former SVP Egmont English Language & Western Europe and head of the UK business, has been named CEO, international. His remit will include all international territories which formed the former Egmont Kids Media, excluding the Nordic countries.

Meanwhile, children’s publishing activities are being strengthened in several countries.

In the UK, Egmont is bringing together its fiction and licensed character book business – Egmont Press and Egmont Publishing Group, Books – to form a single children’s book business in the UK called Egmont Books.

The new combined book business will be led by Cally Poplak, currently MD of the UK’s fiction, classics and picture book business, Egmont Press.

In addition to this, Poplak will also take on the role of MD, Egmont UK, with her remit covering the UK and US.

Other key management moves as a result of the changes include Gillian Laskier becoming MD of Egmont Magazines (she was formerly group sales director).

David Riley, MD of Egmont UK’s licensed character business will be leaving the firm, but he will return in the New Year in a consultancy role to work on a number of international and UK licensing projects across the Egmont group.

Former president of Egmont Kids Media and EVP, Egmont, Frank Knau has chosen to focus on charity and board work, and will continue to work part-time for Egmont as well as represent the firm on several boards around the world. Alison David, consumer insight director, will also be joining the UK management team.

"This reorganisation of the UK business comes as part of our commitment to keep the business strong and profitable in a media landscape with fast changing consumer behaviours," explained McMenemy. "Uniting the two books businesses creates many advantages and under the leadership of Cally and the new UK management team, I am certain that Egmont UK will continue to have a very successful future.

"I am immensely proud to be leading our new international business. We are Europe’s largest children’s publisher and a vibrant and exciting business focused on providing great content."
