2012 was record year at the box office

The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Skyfall and Ice Age all boost cinema audiences.

Box office takings in the US in 2012 hit record levels, according to Hollywood.com.

Figures hit $10.8 billion - up six per cent on 2011's $10.215 billion. This also beats the previous record of $10.6 billion set in 2009.

Attendance stood at 1.36 billion tickets sold - also up six per cent on 2011's 1.288 billion.

The most successful film of the year was The Avengers - which took $1.5 billion worldwide - followed by The Dark Knight Rises ($1 billion) and Skyfall ($950.6 million).

Ice Age: Continental Drift, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, The Amazing Spider-man, Madagascar 3, The Hunger Games, Men in Black 3 and Brave completed the top ten.
