Alice in Wonderland is a record breaker

Disney's new 3D film, Alice in Wonderland, has beaten Avatar's record for a UK 3D opening by 26 per cent.

The film, starring Johnny Depp, took £140 million at box offices worldwide, including £10.7 million in the UK, beating Mr Bean by 68 per cent.

Overall, Alice in Wonderland claimed the record as biggest March opening weekend ever in the UK.

Tim Burton's interpretation of the classic tale also claimed the sixth biggest opening weekend in box office history.

According to, the film was expected to make about $70 million in its first weekend.
