Rovio Entertainment has revealed that Angry Birds, the upcoming 3D movie based on Rovio's bestselling game, will be directed by animation veterans Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis.

Reilly and Kaytis will be making their directorial debuts with Angry Birds, but both have plenty of experience in animated movies.

Kaytis worked at Disney for 19 years, serving as animation supervisor on Tangled, supervising animator of the character of Rhino in Bolt, and he also created and oversaw the end credits sequence for Wreck-It Ralph.

More recent work by Kaytis includes animation on Disney's upcoming Frozen as well as work on the Oscar-winning short film Paperman, which played in cinemas before Wreck-It Ralph.

Reilly worked at Sony Pictures Animation from 2003 as a storyboard artist, and in his time at the company has worked on films including Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.

He was also a director and head of story on several development projects at Sony Pictures Animation and, away from animation, was a storyboard artist Spider-Man 2.

“I’m very excited that Fergal and Clay have joined us, bringing with them their vast expertise," said Rovio Entertainment CEO Mikael Hed.

"They are two of the brightest rising talents in animation, and I’m confident we are building the right team to tell the story of Angry Birds and deliver an amazing movie experience to our fans.”

The film is being produced by John Cohen and Catherine Winder and executive produced by David Maisel, with a screenplay from Jon Vitti, who has previously written for The Simpsons Movie, Da Ali G Show and the US version of The Office.

"David, Catherine and I are thrilled to welcome Fergal and Clay to the Angry Birds filmmaking team," added producer John Cohen.

"They both have an extraordinary range of talents, and we're looking forward to working with them to bring the birds and pigs to life on the big screen."

The upcoming movie marks Rovio’s first foray into feature films and Angry Birds is scheduled to land in cinemas on July 1st, 2016.
