Barbie flagship store picks up accolade

House of Barbie Shanghai wins best international retail interior prize.

Barbie's first global flagship store - House of Barbie Shanghai - has won the Best International Retail Interior 2009 at the Retail Interiors Awards, just six months after opening.

Set on one of the busiest shopping streets in downtown Shanghai, the store - which was designed by New York-based firm Slade Architecture - covers approximately 40,000 square feet of retail space on six floors.

It houses the world's largest and most comprehensive collection of Barbie dolls and lifestyle products including fashion, cosmetics, accessories and publishing, as well as experiential, activity driven attractions. These include a Barbie design centre, fashion stage, café and spa.

Judging criteria required winners to demonstrate 'outstanding design coupled with commercial success'. Judges commented that "Barbie Shanghai was hands down the best new store to open this year".

"This is a legendary moment in the brand's history," said Richard Dickson, senior VP and general manager of the Barbie brand at Mattel. "By capturing the essence of the brand in a four wall experience, we have created a fully-realised expression of a new, broader vision for the brand centering on fashion and aspiration for girls."
