Great Britain's most successful boxer, Nicola Adams has inspired a new Barbie doll, as part of the brand's effort to empower girls around the world.
84 per cent of UK mums worry about the kind of role models their daughters are exposed to, and this latest move signifies an effort to show girls that they have the potential to become anything they want.
The Nicola Adams doll – the first ever boxer Barbie – is Nicola in miniature, complete with boxing gloves to shatter any glass ceiling, boxing gear emblazoned with her trademark ‘Lioness’ nickname, and immortalises Nicola’s distinctive hairstyle.
“I am so excited and honoured to be Barbie’s first ever UK Shero and the first ever boxer Barbie. Having my own Nicola Adams Barbie doll is so amazing and my hope is that everything I do helps more people realise they can do anything they put their mind to," commented Adams.
Finding that 72 per cent of UK girls are inspired by their role model’s achievements, Barbie is asking fans of all ages to share#MoreRoleModels – sparking a global call to action by asking fans to tag and share the female role models that inspire them, using #MoreRoleModels on social media.
"Without my own role models, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Growing up, my biggest role models were my mum and Muhammed Ali – there were no female boxers in media when I was a kid, and I might have discovered my passion sooner if I’d seen other women boxing," she continued.
"That’s why empowering the next generation of kids is something I’m passionate about and it’s great to work with Barbie to share my story now. I hope my doll inspires young girls to believe that they can break boundaries in whatever they choose to do.”
