The BBC has acquired the fourth season of the popular pre-school show, Octonauts.

The new series - produced by Silvergate Media - will consist of 24 11-minute episodes and two 22-minute specials.

The BBC was the first ever broadcaster to air Octonauts when it launched the first series on CBeebies in 2010.

Since then, the show has aired on the channel and frequently tops the CBeebies TV ratings and iPlayer chart.

Geraint Marsh, SVP global TV distribution and consumer products of Silvergate Media, said: "CBeebies' continuous broadcast and support has provided a solid foundation for the Octonauts brand to grow from strength to strength.

"Our creative team, along with Brown Bag Films, is working on some fantastic new adventures which stay true to the core Octonauts values of fast-paced adventure mixed with solid science curriculum and we're really looking forward to sharing them with CBeebies viewers."

Controller of CBeebies, Kay Benbow, added: "The Octonauts has truly captured the imagination of our audience and they are enduringly popular characters.

"When a new series was discussed our reaction was immediate - as Captain Barnacles would say, 'Let's do this thing.'"

Octonauts was also one of the four brands chosen by CBeebies to feature on the channel's first ever mobile app, CBeebies Playtime.

The app launched in August last year and was downloaded over a million times during the first six weeks of release.
