BDO's High Street Sales Tracker has reported continued growth in July, mainly thanks to the fashion sector.

An overall year on year rise of 2.6 per cent on a like-for-like basis for the four weeks to July 31st was reported.

Fashion retailers saw year on year growth of 3.7 per cent, with the cold July weather prompting an early run on autumn ranges, combined with promotional activity.

Non-store sales were also up 39.9 per cent, with fashion sales again being attributed to the boost.

Don Williams, national head of retail and wholesale at BDO, commented that the numbers show consumers will continue to spend with retailers which offer exciting products and promotions, supported by good service.

"The retailers doing this can have the confidence to continue investing in their multi-channel offering and on quality retail sites in the best locations," he said.

However, Williams did sound a note of caution. "Many of these sales have been boosted through discounting. What long-term effect this has on margins is a story yet to be told."
