BDO: High Street sales hold up

Positive growth reported across the board for week ending May 9th.

High Street spending is continuing to hold up well, according to BDO, with like for like sales up 3.5 per cent for the week ending May 9th.

Non fashion retailers enjoyed their best week since Easter, with the majority of stores reporting positive results (up 3.8 per cent). Apart from luxury, health and beauty also performed well.

Fashion also had a positive week (up 2.6 per cent). Higher-end brands generally outperformed, while trade across mainstream brands was slower and more promotion driven.

Homewares positive sales of recent weeks also continued (up ten per cent), boosted by strong demand for DIY products.

Meanwhile, non store sales grew at their fastest rate since the first week of the year - up 54.8 per cent.

"High Street spending held up extremely well this week, even with the uncertainty around the outcome of the general election," said Don Williams, head of retail at BDO.
