High Street spending grew by 6.1 per cent in September, capping a strong summer for medium-sized retailers, with like for like sales figures reaching the best levels for five years.
BDO's September High Street Sales Tracker found that fashion sales grew 5.7 per cent, while non fashion grew by six per cent - buoyed by strong performances in the luxury sector. The real surge in demand, however, came from the homewares sector, up 10.2 per cent, a strong reversal on last year's figure of -2.8 per cent.
"The High Street has improved its planning, erring on the side of being under, rather than overbought, focusing on keeping margins high and avoiding being lumbered with mountains of excess stock," said Don Williams, head of retail at BDO."
Like for like online growth has slowed to 26.9 per cent - from 41 per cent in September in 2009.
