High Street retailers maintained a constant level of sales last week, putting them in a good position to grow as spring approaches.
Figures from the BDO High Street Sales Tracker for the week ending February 21st show overall sales up 5.6 per cent on the same week last year.
Non-fashion delivered a strong set of results - up 8.6 per cent - with big gains made in most categories. Gifting and leisure posted the strongest results.
Fashion, meanwhile, was up 4.3 per cent - with branded youth ranges having a good week - while homewares was up 9.4 per cent, the sector's fastest growth rate this year.
Non store sale were up 53.2 per cent, aided by the half term holiday.
"The half term holiday certainly helped to boost footfall on the High Street, with overall takings rising for the third week in a row," said Don Williams, head of retail at BDO LLP. "The real winners last week, however, were online retailers with fashion sites in particular reporting very strong sales.
"This positive start to the year puts retailers, whether online or on the High Street, in a good position to emerge into the spring season on good form."
