The latest sales figures from BDO's High Street Sales Tracker for the week ending October 18th saw most categories climbing for a second consecutive week.

Overall, sales were up 5.7 per cent, the best weekly upturn since June. Only homewares failed to beat last year's depressed figures, with the category down 5.2 per cent. Non fashion sales grew for the eighth week in a row (up 9.1 per cent), which is the best run experienced since the start of 2008. Big gains were made in most categories, with luxury and gifting posting the strongest results.

Fashion was up 6.2 per cent, with the colder weather helping to stimulate sales of outerwear and footwear, while there was also strong demand for lifestyle and youth ranges.

Non-store sales jumped sharply, up 46.1 per cent, despite the threat of the national postage strike.
